OUCH: Delta Launches Highly Punitive Basic Business, Premium Economy, And First Class Fares
Airlines have successfully wielded Basic Economy fares to get passengers to pay more for what used to be included in all fares. The network carriers have also used it as a successful tool to steal away passengers from low-cost carriers.
United launched Basic Business fares a few months ago, and now Delta has gone even further.
Delta will phase in basic fares in Delta One, which will be branded as Basic Business, in premium economy, which will be branded as Delta Premium Select Basic, and short-haul first class, which will be branded as Delta First Basic.
United currently doesn’t offer domestic first class basic fares, but I’m sure they’ll be happy to match Delta’s move.
While United offers club access and business class check-in to basic business passengers, Delta will not offer free club access or business class check-in.
And while United doesn’t offer basic award tickets, Delta does. Delta’s award rates are already significantly higher than United’s, and Delta’s lowest award rates will also have basic restrictions. Skypesos indeed.
As with United, don’t expect lower fares. The cheapest fares will be rebranded as Basic and you’ll have to spend hundreds more for the non-basic fare:

Delta premium basic rules:
- Basic tickets won’t include free seat assignments.
- Baggage allowance will be reduced by 1 bag, so basic business to Europe will include 1 bag instead of 2.
- Mileage earning will be reduced
- Upgrades won’t be possible
- Same-day confirmed changes and standby won’t be possible
- Changes or cancellations will come with a fee.
- Basic business passengers won’t have access to Delta One checkin or Delta One lounges effective for flights on or after 1/19/27.
- Basic premium passengers can access Sky Clubs if they have access through a club membership or credit card.
- Delta Gold and higher elites on Delta Premium Select Basic fares will lose club access effective for flights on or after 1/19/27, unless they have an eligible club membership or credit card.
- Delta 360 elites flying Delta First Basic and Basic Business will retain Sky Club access through their 360 credentials.
Expect Delta basic premium fares to roll out on all routes over the next few months.
For now, this is all a big incentive to book American and can be a competitive AAdvantage for the airline. Sadly, I’m sure they’ll match basic premium fares soon enough.
What do you think about basic premium cabin fares? Will you upgrade to a standard premium cabin fare?
