Citi allows applications for 1 card every 8 days and 2 cards every 2 months. You can check application status at 866-252-0118 and you can call reconsideration if you’re denied at 800-695-5171.

Spend Threshold:

You’ll need to spend $5,000 on this card within 4 months.

My local natural gas company allows me to prepay up to $1,000 on a credit card for a $1.65 flat fee. That’s a great way to earn miles and help meet a spend threshold. My electricity supplier allows me to pay with a credit card for free as long as I am enrolled in autopay.

Of course, you’ll earn more miles than that if you spend on AA flights or car rentals or hotels booked through AA.

Virtual card numbers

With a virtual card number, you can set a dollar limit and/or expiration date to generate a one-time use credit card number so that you don’t keep getting charged for subscriptions or have your real card number stolen, among myriad other potential uses.

Using AA Miles:

American Airlines has fantastic mileage uses, with domestic travel from just 5K miles with free cancellations until the time of departure!

While Delta and United have killed off their award charts and increased miles needed for flights, American has retained published partner award charts, though their own flights are now dynamic.

When Delta and United eliminated their close-in award booking fees, they increased the miles needed for flights. American also removed their close-in booking fees, but they haven’t increased the miles needed for close-in flights.

American also has a very useful award map here to help find cheap awards.

American also has extremely valuable partner awards on airlines like Alaska, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Finnair, Hawaiian, Iberia, JAL, Qantas, Qatar, Royal Air Maroc, and Air Tahiti Nui, and more!. Some partner flights must be booked over the phone.

Dan’s Quick Thoughts

This card fills the mid-tier gap that United and Delta both have between their less expensive and ultra-premium cards. It comes with various perks and lounge passes to take the sting out of the $350 fee.

I love that a single lounge pass is enough for an adult and 3 kids to access AA lounges at their origin, connection, or arrival airport for a 24 hour period. For example, AA’s great lounge in LaGuardia has complimentary hot kosher meals.

Will it make sense to spend on the card, outside of the bonus categories? I love having AA elite status, which I find to have higher upgrade rates than Delta or United. With AA cards, you earn 1 loyalty point per dollar spent for earning elite status, plus you earn bonuses for hitting loyalty point rewards tiers.

However, if you just want to earn miles, you’ll be better off with a no annual fee Citi Double Cash® Card, which earns an effective 2 Citi ThankYou® Points per dollar spent everywhere. View Rates & Fees here. Read more about the Double Cash card here.

The no annual fee Citi Strata℠ Card also has excellent spending categories. View Rates & Fees here. Read more about the Strata card here.

While those no annual fee cards can only transfer points to American at a 1:0.7 ratio, you will be able to transfer points from those cards to American at a 1:1 ratio if you also have The Citi Strata Premier® Card (View Rates & Fees here) or with The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card (View Rates & Fees here) which also have lucrative signup bonuses, spending categories, and card perks. Read more about Strata Premier here and more about Strata Elite here.

If you have those card combos, it would mean that you are trading 2 points per dollar spent everywhere for 1 mile per dollar, plus 1 loyalty point per dollar and the rewards that come with the loyalty point tiers.

If you just want to rack up the miles, the Double Cash + Strata Elite/Strata Premier will earn miles faster, but if you want elite status, spending on AA cards will be the way to go.

It’s also worth noting that this card has no foreign transaction fees, while Double Cash does have 3% foreign transaction fees.

The excellent limited-time signup bonus alone will do much more than cover the annual fee, and you can use the annual credits in 2026 and in 2027, so the first-year has a great value proposition. Whether it will be worth keeping after the first year or worth trading for another Citi card, like a less expensive AA card or a Double Cash card, will depend on your needs, but you’ll have a year to try it out and see!
