United flight 169, operated by a Boeing 767-400, departed today from Venice at 11am and landed in Newark at 2pm ET. Onboard were 221 passengers and 10 crewmembers.

During landing, it seemingly descended too rapidly, and it hit a bakery truck and a light pole on the NJ turnpike before touching down at Newark Liberty International:

Fox Baltimore reports that the truck belonged to Baltimore-based H&S Bakery and that the plane’s wheel hit the driver’s window. Miraculously, the driver only suffered minor injuries!

United shared this statement with DansDeals,

“Upon its final approach into Newark International Airport, United flight 169 came into contact with a light pole. The aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate normally and no passengers or crew were injured. Our maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft. We will conduct a rigorous flight safety investigation into the incident and our crew has been removed from service as part of the process.”

Oddly, that statement does not mention the truck, and United did not immediately respond to our questions about the truck.

It’s also surprising that the pilots didn’t do a go-around when they were coming in too low, but we’ll have to wait for more information to come out to learn more.
